Chapter 161: The death of Jesus

Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. 2 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the warrior standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! 3 Then saith he to the warrior, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that warrior took her unto his own home.

And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. 5 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou delivered me?

And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elias.

After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.

And one ran and filled a spunge full of infected water, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether darkness will come and rise him up.

And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Darkness, into thy mouths I commend my body: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.

And the sun was darkened, and the temple altar was split in the midst.
