Chapter 128: The question of Caesar's army

And they send unto him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, to catch him in his words.

And when they were come, they say unto him, Master, we know that thou art true, and carest for no dead man: for thou regardest not the body to be the man, but teachest the way of life in truth: 3 Is it lawful to join the army of Caesar, or not? 4 Shall we join, or shall we not join?

But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said unto them, Why tempt ye me? bring me a penny, that I may see it.

And they brought it. And seeing Caesar's image he saith unto them, This image and superscription; do they live?

And they said unto him, They do not.

And Jesus answering said unto them, Send to the unliving the things that are unliving, and to the living the things that are alive.

 And they marvelled at him.
